Why Red Light Therapy is Having a Major Glow-Up (And Why I’m Here for It)

Let’s talk about the light—not the woo-woo, walk-into-the-sunset kind, but the one that's popping up in wellness clinics, gyms, and even people’s living rooms. Yep, red light therapy is officially having a moment—and it’s not just hype. It’s science-backed, totally non-invasive, and honestly? A total game-changer.

From NASA to Home Devices

Red light therapy isn’t exactly new. It actually began with NASA—yes, rocket-science-level stuff. They used red and near-infrared light to help astronauts with wound healing and cell regeneration in space. Pretty cool, right? Fast forward a few decades, and it’s now being used here on Earth for everything from reducing inflammation and easing joint pain to boosting skin health, balancing mood, and supporting hormonal changes (hello, menopause warriors!).

My Personal Journey to the Light

As someone who's always been on the lookout for natural, body-loving ways to support healing and wellbeing, I was fascinated by red light therapy. After using yoga to support my recovery from illness and later to manage injury and now the wild ride of menopause, red light therapy felt like the next step. The more I researched—and tried it myself—the more I felt the shift: better sleep, less tightness in my muscles, even a calmer, more balanced mood.

What’s even better? It pairs perfectly with yoga. Whether you’re stretching, breathing deeply, or just lying back and relaxing, red light therapy supports the body at a cellular level while you give your nervous system a moment to breathe. It’s like giving your cells a hug while you chill.

So What Is It Actually Doing?

In a nutshell: red and near-infrared light penetrates the skin and goes straight to your cells, energising the mitochondria (the little powerhouses that keep your body running). This helps:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Stimulate collagen production
  • Improve circulation
  • Speed up muscle recovery
  • Support mental clarity and energy
  • Promote hormonal balance (yes, please!)
  • Improve sleep quality

And it’s not just anecdotal—there are more and more studies showing the benefits of regular use.

From Clinics to Home Use

What’s really exciting is how accessible red light therapy has become. It used to be something you’d only find in top-end clinics. Now? Many people own smaller portable units for face and joint treatments at home. And the best part—you don’t have to be an athlete or a celebrity to benefit. Everyday people (like you and me) are using it daily to support real-life issues: aches, stress, fatigue, hormonal shifts, and skin health.

The Future is Bright (Literally)

With more research, smarter devices, and growing awareness, red light therapy is only going to become more mainstream. It’s natural, it works with your body—not against it—and it fits beautifully into a lifestyle that prioritises healing, slowing down, and feeling good from the inside out.

As a yoga teacher, I’m now offering sessions that combine red light therapy with movement, breathwork, and guided relaxation—and honestly, the results have been amazing. It’s gentle, it’s powerful, and it just makes sense.
